Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.

This stunning necklace is a fabulous example of jewelry crafted from Jet! From the Victorian (ca1880) era, the necklace has a beautiful and bold look, made entirely from hand carved Jet links which come together to form one, extremely long chain. The oval-shaped links are consistent in size and carry around the entire length of the piece, clasping securely at a hook closure. The necklace looks beautiful worn alone or could be paired with a complimentary pendant or locket if desired. The piece makes a bold statement when worn and would make a fabulous addition to any collection!

Measurements: The chain measures approximately 50.5" long. The individual Jet links measure approximately 7/8" tall, a little more than 5/8" wide and 1/8" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the Jet links and the clasp is secure and in good working condition.
