Art Nouveau 14kt Hand Carved Tourmaline Medusa Cameo Ring
A stunning and unusual tourmaline ring from the Art Nouveau (ca1910) era! This alluring piece is crafted in 14kt yellow gold and features a single tourmaline cameo bezel set in the center. The tourmaline, which is substantial in size, is round in shape and delicately hand-carved to portray a raised image of the mythological Greek figure Medusa. The details of the image are wonderful and intricate, including a stoic expression, soft facial features, and flowing hair represented by snakes. Resting at either shoulder of the wide, graduating gold band is the raised image of three slithering snakes which intertwine with each other. The snakes have a wonderful scale-like surface on their bodies and rest atop a background of soft texture. The tourmaline displays a wonderful translucence and has a rich, grass green color and the inside of the shank is stamped "14K." A lovely and unusual antique piece, it has a very special look and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size 7.5 but could be resized. The tourmaline centerpiece (including the gold frame) measures approximately 5/8" in diameter and has a depth of a little less than 1/2".
Condition: The ring remains in excellent antique condition. The tourmaline stone is intact and secure within its setting and the gold setting is in excellent condition. Some natural inclusions are visible inside the stone, however, none of which are noticeable when worn.
