Victorian Carved Coral Link Chain + Cornicello Italian Horn Pendant 32.5"
An Italian horn is an amulet or talisman that is believed to offer protection against the evil eye when worn. It is also known by the Italian names cornicello and cornetto (or the abbreviated word "corno"), meaning "little horn" or "hornlet." Typically, Italian horns are carved from materials such as red coral.
A gorgeous "cornicello" Italian horn pendant hangs at the center of this beautiful coral link necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The necklace is particularly long, and is comprised of graduated coral links that alternate with gold-filled connector rings. Each coral link is hand carved, featuring delicate cut-outs and a lightly grooved texture on the surface. Hanging from the center of the chain is a yellow gold swivel watch clasp (stamped "10K" on the inside), which holds the stunning cornicello pendant.
The Italian horn is hand-carved from oxblood coral into a smooth, curved shape and displays a rich, magnificent color that is free of dyes or enhancements. Resting at the top of the pendant is a simple 18kt yellow gold cap, which hangs from a ring bail stamped "750" on the side. The generous length of the chain allows it to easily slip on and off overhead, no need for a clasp. The gorgeous pendant can be detached if desired, and would look equally striking whether worn alone or grouped with additional charms!
Measurements: The necklace measures 32.5" in total length. The pendant hangs approximately 2" long (including the bail at the top), and hangs 2 3/4" long when the swivel watch clasp is also included. The horn itself measures 1 5/8" long and is 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the yellow gold or gold-filled findings. There is a small chip near the tip of the coral pendant, which is not noticeable when worn. The gold cap and bail are securely attached at the top.
