Victorian 18kt Swiss Enamel Fancy Open Link Chain Necklace 20"
Swiss enameled pieces were commonly produced to be sold as souvenirs for Victorian travelers. A very fine type of enameling, this technique used very intricate detail and often portrayed scenic Swiss Alps villages with streams, mountains and wonderful homes and churches. These serene images were produced by first covering a piece of metal in a neutral enameled color. A wonderful detailed picture was then painted on the enameled base and re-fired to set the image. A clear glaze was then applied to the image to preserve it. The pieces were often set in a hollow frame making them very light and comfortable to wear.
Although this necklace does not depict a traditional scenic Swiss image, it features the fine Swiss enamel craft, dating from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, this stunning piece is comprised of an alternating pattern of fancy links that connect together to form a gorgeous flexible chain. The pattern consists of an elongated oval link and a smaller rectangular link, both covered on either side in colorful Swiss enamel work with gorgeous scalloped edges. The oval link features an open center, with a stunning black, white, red, and light green enameled pattern, while the smaller link is adorned in similar colors, along with periwinkle blue. The applied enameling is mirrored on both sides and embellished with vibrant gold outlines and delicate beadwork. A simple round connector ring attaches each link together and finishing the design is a large spring ring clasp that fastens the chain together and creates a perfect place for adding a special pendant or locket, if desired. The piece rests beautifully along the necklace and its hollow nature makes it incredibly lightweight for comfortable wear. A magnificent and versatile piece that could be worn day or night, this chain would make a stunning addition to any collection!
Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures approximately 20" long. The open center links measure about 7/8" long, slightly under 1/2" wide, and 1/8" thick. The smaller links measure about 3/8" long, 1/2" wide, and 1/8" thick. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 17.6dwt (27.4 grams).
Condition: The overall condition of the chain necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting and the spring ring clasp is secure and in good working order. Due to the intricate and delicate nature of Swiss enameling, and given the age of the piece, some of the enamel work shows minor wear when under close examination, however, it is not noticeable when worn, and does not detract from the overall beauty of the piece.
