A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface of a stone. Intaglios were often present in antique fobs and signet rings, used for the purpose of sealing the wax of a letter or note.
Old-fashioned and Victorian era watches were generally wound using a small key that would fit into a space at the front of the watch. Watch keys were not only designed for utility, but were often decorative pieces that doubled as pendants or fobs. They are still appreciated for their designs as wearable pieces of jewelry, though they are not generally used for their original winding purpose in the modern day. Antique watch fobs have become quite popular among collectors!
A gorgeous and unique watch key fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This beautiful 3-dimensional piece is crafted in 15kt yellow gold and adorns a stunning citrine at the base. The watch key graduates from the top, forming an octagonal shape, which is decorated with swirled etched leaf motif on the surface. Set within the base is a hand carved octagonal-shaped citrine stone seal, exhibiting beautiful golden yellow hues with facets that catch the light with every turn. Attached to the base of the barrel-shaped key is a delicate Cuban link chain handle that meets at a simple round bail at the top. Measurements: The piece hangs approximately 1 3/8" long (including the bail at the top), and measures about 1/2" wide and thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting. The citrine is intact and securely set. The bail is secure and in good working order.
