Victorian Brass Gilt & Reverse Carved Crystal Terrior Dog Pin

SKU: 38323

$395

Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the image appears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.

This reverse carved crystal fox terrier pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the craft! The large Essex crystal cabochon rests on a shimmery Mother of Pearl background and is bezel set within a decorative beaded brass gilt frame. The carved image depicts the face of a charming fox terrier dog. The hand-painted detail portrays the dog's expressive facial features, curved earls, and buckled collar at the neck. The reverse side of the piece has a bar pin clasp, perfect for fastening the brooch to a favorite garment. This unique antique pin would appeal to any dog lover, fox terrier owner, or collector of reverse carved Essex crystal!

Measurements: The pin has a 1 3/8" diameter and is 5/8" thick.

Condition: The pin has some noticeable signs of wear as an antique piece. There is some visible fading to the painted image in certain areas, and some light surface wear to the surface of the Essex crystal cabochon. Some discoloration is visible around the beadwork border and to the back of the piece. The pin clasp is intact and fastens securely. Despite the signs of previous wear and love, the piece is full of antique character and charm!
