Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard Jet. It is believed that the soft Jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of Jet. As a result, the Jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.

A wonderful strand of faceted jet beads from the late Victorian (ca1880) era! This stylish necklace is comprised of large, graduated jet beads which form a long slip-on necklace. The multi-faceted surface of each bead catches the light when worn, giving a rich appearance to the deep black jet. All of the beads are hand strung on heavy dark thread, and the length allows the necklace to slip on and off easily, no need for a clasp. When worn, the necklace has a very substantial look that merges seamlessly into modern day fashion. It makes a striking statement and would be a fantastic everyday accessory!

Measurements: The overall length of the necklace measures approximately 30". The largest bead, which is in the center of the strand, measures approximately 1 1/4" wide and 1" thick, and the smallest measures approximately 3/8" wide and thick.

Condition: The overall condition of this necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage or chips to the jet beads and the stringing is in fine condition.
