Victorian Tortoise Shell Locket & Chain Necklace
A fantastic tortoise shell locket necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Now a banned material, antique tortoise shell jewelry has become very collectible. This unusual piece features a tortoise shell locket that hangs from a necklace made of carved tortoise shell links. The rich tortoise shell varies in color with wonderful deep brown and dark gold and amber hues. The locket itself is particularly large in size, and is accented by an intricate raised design on the front surface. The design is an artistic overlapping of the initials "CLN," which have been textured with hand carved detail. The locket is hinged and opens to reveal a space behind glass to store a favorite photograph. The opposing side of the locket shows the letter "A"carved into the shell, with what appears to be the letter "N" above it. The locket hangs from a lovely chain made from hand carved tortoise shell links that are graduated and vary in size. The necklace hooks together at a carved "S" clasp in the back. A remarkably bold and attractive statement piece, it would make a fabulous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The tortoise shell link chain measures 20" long from end to end. The locket hangs 2 3/8" long, is 1 1/2" wide, and has a depth of 6/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the locket and chain is excellent. Aside from normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the tortoise shell locket or to the link chain. The locket opens easily and fastens securely.
