Art Nouveau French Sterling Repousse Woman + Scrolling Wheel Pendant
A very rare and unusual repousse pendant from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! Crafted in sterling silver, this lovely piece features an artistic image of woman with a moveable wheel of sentimental French expressions. The profile of the woman's face and arm is intricately detailed with flowing locks of hair, a romantic facial expression, and a raised hand embracing the open space displaying the words. Beneath her underarm is a scrolling wheel that, as it moves, displays eight stamped French phrases in the open space: "Amour" (Love), "Heritage" (Heritage), "Bonheur" (Happiness), "Gloire" (Glory), "Mariage" (Marriage or Wedding), "Richesse" (Wealth), "Chagrin" (Chagrin), "Plaisir" (Pleasure). Found in between each word is a delicate star, providing a charming accent! The stars and words are imprinted into the setting's surface, exhibiting an applied patina that adds further depth and dimension to the design. A simple ring bail is attached at the top, which is stamped "STERLING" along with a small maker's mark. Stamped on the back of the pendant is the word "Deposé" (indicating that the piece was patented or registered in France). An incredible example of Art Nouveau work, this sentimental piece would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 1/2" long (including the bail), is 1 1/8" across at its widest point, and is 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. The bail and scrolling wheel are secure, intact, and in excellent working condition.
