Victorian 15kt Gold Quartz + Agate Horseshoe Locket Pendant
Gold-in-quartz was formed while the earth was still in its molten state. During the cooling and solidification process, veins of gold became trapped with the crystals of quartz in the mine. This created a very dramatic contrast between the white quartz and the yellow of the gold. Jewelry crafted from gold quartz became quite a fashion statement of the 1880's.
An unusual and gorgeous horseshoe locket pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 15kt rosy gold, the surface is adorned with incredible pieces of inlaid gold quartz and agate stones. Included in the ensemble of stones are varying shades of soft brown, rich grey, creamy beige and pinkish coral, and forest green, with light-catching flecks of vibrant gold. A row of 7 agate stones on the outer border represent "nails" (always 7 for good luck!). Each inlaid stone is separated by thin veins of gold, contrasting beautifully with the earthy natural tones of the agates and gold quartz.
The bail at the top acts as the hinge that allows the locket to open from the bottom. Inside is a glass covered space to hold a favorite photograph or special memento. The back of the pendant holds a large inlaid brown agate stone. This fabulous equestrian pendant would look marvelous hanging from a favorite chain and could make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs 1 1/2" long, including the bail and measures a little over 1" wide and is a little more than 1/4" thick. The inside of the bail measures 3mm in diameter.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. All of the stone are secure and intact. The bail and locket hinge mechanism of the pendant are secure and in good working order.
