Victorian 15kt Rock Quartz Snake & Intaglio Signet Fob
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. A spinner or swivel fob has two or more plaques which can be turned or swiveled within a moveable bracket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A magnificent fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! English in origin, this extra large fob is crafted in 15kt yellow gold and has quite an ornate design. At the base is a beautiful rock quartz crystal stone, which has an intaglio image carved into the base and is faceted to create a prism-like effect. The intaglio appears to represent a dog and crown, with a Latin phrase that encircles the center. Forming the gold handle is the body and tail of a slithering snake, whose head rests at the center. Some of the original engraved detail representing scales is still visible along the twisted gold framework. At the top of the piece, the snake's tail curls to form a large gold "O" ring, allowing the fob to be easily hung and worn from a favorite chain. A spectacular Victorian piece, it is perfect for any snake lover or fob collector!
Measurement: The fob hangs 1 5/8" long (including the gold ring at the top). The oval-shaped base of the fob measures 1 1/4" tall and 1" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. There is some light surface wear to the gold setting, which is normal for a Victorian era piece and does not detract from its beautiful design. The engraved detail is now partially faded in due to previous wear and love. The rock quartz crystal intaglio is intact and rests securely in its bezel setting. There are a few minor inclusions within the rock crystal, but no visible surface chips or scratches.
