A spectacular lorgnette from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) period! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, the piece consists of a pair of folding glasses encased in a breathtaking repousse lorgnette setting. The front and the back of the lorgnette is wonderfully detailed in soft swirls and scrolls, which are raised above the surface in a traditional repousse fashion. Decorating the surface are five vivid blue sapphires, which are set within the surface to form a colorful centerpiece. The back of the lorgnette carries a simple swirled design and a set of hand engraved initials. The glasses have an expandable design, allowing them to fold in half while hidden inside the gold cover. They easily swing out with a simple push of a button lever located on the side of the handle. At the end of the gold handle is a gold ring, which is perfect for hanging the piece from a chain or watch swivel hook. Stamped on on the side of the ring is "14K" beside a small hallmark symbol of a single rose or flower. A fantastic example of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, this special piece would be perfect for the fine antiques collector!

Measurements: The entire piece measures 4 3/4" long, from the top of the case to the base of the handle. It measures 1 1/4" across at the widest point, and 3/8" at the thickest point. The retractible eyeglasses measure 4" wide when expanded, each oval lense measuring approximately 1 1/2" wide and 1" tall.

Condition: The overall condition of the lorgnette is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold repousse setting, and all five sapphire stones are intact. The eye glasses expand easily and stay secure once placed within the gold cover. Unfortunately, one glass lense is no longer intact. If desired, a replacement glass lens can be cut at the customer's request. There is a natural patina on the surface of the gold setting, which is normal for antique jewelry and adds to its unique beauty and character.
