Late Victorian 14kt Diamond Pearl Enameled Locket Necklace
Guilloché, in English usually Guillloché, is an engraving technique in which a very precise, intricate pattern is mechanically etched into an underlying material with very fine detail. Most commonly, the Guilloche surface was then enameled and the repetitive, intricate design would show through the colorful enamel.
An absolutely magnificent Late Victorian (ca1900) locket necklace with wonderful detail! This fabulous piece is comprised of a stunning locket pendant which hangs from a fine gold chain. The locket, which is made of vibrant 14kt yellow gold, has a stunning burgundy red enamel surface with a very intricate and detailed design etched beneath it. The locket is particularly large in size and oval in shape and has a bold 8-point starburst riveted into the front. Lining the surface of the starburst are 9 lustrous pearls and 18 old Rose Cut diamonds. Below the enameling is a Guilloché etched design which rays out from beneath the starburst and the entire locket is surrounded by a smooth gold frame. On the back of the piece is a glass covered locket face and a simple gold bail is attached at the top. The locket hangs from a complimentary Victorian chain. Extremely long in length, the chain is made from 12kt yellow gold links which have a simple, beautiful design. Each link has an intertwined loop design with textured accents on the side and an extra clasp and jump ring have been added, allowing you to wear it at 2 different lengths: 29.5" and 33" long. It's a fabulous and unusual piece from the Art Nouveau period and would make a wondeful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket pendant hangs approximately 2 5/8" long, is 2" wide and is 1/2" thick. The chain can be worn at 2 lengths: 29.5" long and 33" long.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket and chain is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the Victorian chain and both clasps are secure and in good working condition. There is no apparent damage to the enameled surface of the locket and all of the diamonds and pearls are intact. There is some very minor wear to the hollow gold frame, however, this is not noticeable when the piece is worn.
