Art Nouveau Large Sterling Carved Horn & Moonstone Hair Comb
An incredible handmade hair comb from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! This substantial piece is hand-carved from horn, and features a decorative sterling and moonstone top. The natural horn has a shimmery, translucent appearance and pale golden yellow color. A total of 25 long teeth protrude from the curved sterling top, which is beautifully detailed with curvilinear shapes and swirled cutouts. Three large moonstones are bezel set across the face of the comb, each resting in a closed back setting. The moonstones have a wonderful pale blue color and iridescent flash, adding an alluring element to the beautiful design. They stand out dramatically against the darkened setting! The generous size of the comb makes it ideal as a statement accessory for special occasions. It would make a very unique addition to any collection!
Measurements: The entire comb measures 4 1/4" long and 3" tall. The sterling top measures 1 1/4" wide in the middle and 7/8" at the narrowest point. The oval shaped moonstone is 3/4" tall and 1/2" wide. The two circular moonstones have a 1/2" diameter.
Condition: The overall condition of the comb is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting or carved horn, and all three of the moonstones are intact. The sterling silver top has an oxidized surface that gives it a darkened appearance, which is normal for antique jewelry and adds depth to the design.
