Art Nouveau Sterling Repousse Floral Woman Match Safe
This wonderful match safe is a beautiful example of fine repousse work! From the Art Nouveau period (ca1895), this sterling silver piece has the beautiful raised image of a young woman on the surface. The repousse image is intricately detailed, depicting long flowing locks of hair, delicate facial features, and beautiful flowers that decorate her hair and surround her face. The opposite side of the match safe is crafted with a complimentary floral border and a smooth center. The surface of the silver has a natural darkened patina in the grooves of the design, which adds richness and depth to the image. At the top of the match safe is hinged lid that opens to reveal a hollow, open compartment inside where matches would have originally been stored to keep them dry. A beautiful work of art, this match safe has exceptional craftsmanship and would make a special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The match safe measures approximately 2 3/4" tall, is 1 3/4" wide and 5/8" at the thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver, and the lid opens easily and stays securely closed. There is a natural patina that gives a darkened, antique appearance to the sterling silver surface and adds depth to the design. However, it could be polished for a brighter look if desired.
