Estate Hand Carved Bone Skull & Rose Pendant
Antique and vintage jewelry made from hand-carved bone was very popular during the Victorian era (ca 1880). Bone is a hard material from the skeleton of most vertebrate species, but the variety mainly used in jewelry is from such animals as the wild boar or wild hog. It was used to imitate ivory, which was more expensive.
This Estate skull pendant made from hand-carved bone is very striking! The skull is rather large in size and has a crudely carved design reminiscent of pirate folk lore. Cutout shapes depict the eye and nose sockets, and open mouth with engraved lines representing teeth. Clenched in its jaw is a rose that rests with the flower at one side and the stem at the other. At the top of the skull is a simple loop that allows it to be easily hung and worn on a favorite chain. A very unusual piece that is full of character, it has a bold look that makes a fabulous statement when worn!
Measurements: The pendant hangs 2" long, measures 1 1/4" wide, and is 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the hand-carved bone, and the jump ring bail is intact. There is some color variation noticeable, which is normal for natural carved bone and gives this piece its special appeal!
