Victorian 14kt Diamond & Tracery Painted Portrait Locket
A spectacular portrait locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This artistic piece is made of vibrant 14kt yellow gold and features an incredibly intricate design. At the center of the locket is a hand painted portrait, which depicts a lovely young woman in life-like detail. She leans gently against a wall, with a faraway gaze and thoughtful expression on her face. A white shawl is wrapped around her hair, revealing her decorative earrings and matching necklace. The painted imagery includes folds of fabric in her colorful dress, which includes a yellow bodice, red sleeves, and green and striped skirt. Three delicate rose cut diamonds are set within the image, adding a sparkling accent at the bust. Surrounding the portrait is a detailed black tracery enamel motif and repousse border at the top. A fine etched design can be found on the reverse side of the piece. When opened, the interior contains two spaces to store special photographs inside, one side with a removable glass frame. The locket hangs from a fluted gold bail and the top, and would look wonderful matched with a favorite gold chain. An impressive and artistic Victorian piece, it would make a very unique addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs 2" long (including the bail), measures 1 1/8" wide, and is approximately 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting, or to the painted portrait, which is free of chips or scratches. The rose cut diamond accents are intact, and the bail is secure. The locket opens and closes easily and securely. There is some noticeable wear to the edge of the removable frame inside, however, this is not noticeable when worn, and does not affect the beauty or utility of the design. There is some light fading to the black tracery accents in a few areas, but the majority of the design remains intact, and the wear is not noticeable when worn.
