Victorian 18kt Carved Agate Intaglio Beetle Ring
The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax, often used in signet rings.
A beautiful and very unusual intaglio ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful piece is made of vibrant 18kt yellow gold and has an oval shaped banded agate stone set in the center. The carved image is a charming scarab beetle which is bezel set within a wide gold frame. The banded agate stone is creamy blue in color and when carved into, it reveals a black layer beneath, giving it a lovely and dramatic contrast. The shank has a small hallmark along with the stamp "750". It's a fabulous ring and would make a beautiful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The intaglio (including it's gold bezel frame) measures a little less than 5/8" wide and a little less than 3/4" tall. The ring has a finger size 7 but could easily be re-sized.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the carved intaglio center.
