A fabulous onyx locket/pendant from the Victorian (ca1870) era! This unusual piece is rather substantial in size, and consists of a solid onyx plaque that is carved into the shape of a shield. Riveted into the center of the plaque is a three-dimensional lizard, whose entire body is encrusted in delicate pavé set seed pearls. The silver lizard is highly detailed, including webbed feet, a long tail, an open mouth, and two red garnet stones depicting its eyes. The natural seed pearls vary in size and color, representing the scales along the lizard's body. The back of the onyx shield reveals a hinged 15kt gold framed glass locket, which is a perfect place to store a special photograph. At the top of the piece is a complimentary sterling and seed pearl bail, allowing it to be easily hung and worn from a favorite chain. A magnificent and unusual piece from the Victorian era, it has a very striking look and would make a unique addition to any collection!

Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 2 3/4" long (including the bail), measures 1 5/8" wide and 5/8" thick. The lizard is 2" long from head to tail and about 5/8" wide. The oval glass locket frame on the back measures approximately 1 1/4" tall and 7/8" wide.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket/pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the onyx plaque, silver and gold setting, or to any of the seed pearls, all of which are intact. The glass locket frame is intact and very secure, and the bail is secure and intact.
