Victorian 18kt Smoky Topaz Fob with Lion Family Crest Intaglio Seal
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. Many fobs incorporated carved intaglios or signets at the base.
The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving into the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
A fantastic fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The framework of the fob is represented by a decorative handle crafted in 18kt yellow gold. At the base is a smoky topaz seal, which is carved with the detailed intaglio image of a family crest. The imagery includes a shield with a checkerboard motif, and a majestic lion that graces the center. The lion stands on its hind legs, with its front paws raised, its flowing mane and curled tail behind him. The top of the shield also features the head of a lion framed by two crosses. The rich color of the smoky topaz stone looks wonderful within the gold setting, and the facets covering the back of the seal catch the light beautifully. A gold loop at the top of the handle is perfect for hanging the piece from a favorite chain. A strong Victorian piece, it would be perfect for any antique fob collector!
Measurement: The fob stands approximately 1 1/2" tall. The oval shaped base measures 1 1/8" long and 1" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or smoky topaz intaglio, which is intact and free of any significant chips or scratches.
