Victorian 9kt English "LOVE" Locket

The Victorian tradition of incorporating hair into a lockets and other pieces of special keepsake jewelry was rooted in deep sentiment, whether in mourning jewelry or in romantic gifts. Mourning jewelry served as a reminder of loved ones after their death. However, it was also commonplace for women to keep a lock of their sweetheart's or child's hair inside a special locket. Woven and braided versions are especially unique! 

A beautiful and sentimental locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This lovely locket is English in origin and is crafted in 9kt yellow gold. The locket has a double-sided design featuring textured detail on both the front and back. Set the face of the locket is the word "LOVE" in raised letters above a fine etched background. The opposite side features a smooth shield-shaped seal resting above the same textured background, and could be engraved with a set of initials if desired, or simply left smooth. When opened, the locket reveals a glass-covered space for storing a special photograph inside. The other door holds an intricately woven strand of hair kept behind glass, and is a fine example of the craft. However, the hair can easily be removed and replaced with a personal photograph if desired. At the top of the piece is a gold ring, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain. This wonderful locket would look beautiful worn everyday, and would make a special addition to any collection!

Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 1 1/4 " long (including the gold ring at the top). The locket itself measures 7/8" tall, 3/4" wide, and 3/8" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. A few minor dings appear on the reverse side of the locket, but are not visible when worn. Both glass frames inside are intact and in good condition. The locket opens and closes easily, and the ring for hanging is secure.
