Victorian Italian 10kt Blue Agate + Micro Mosaic Bird Pin
An unusual micro mosaic pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful Italian piece holds a stunning blue agate stone at the center of a decorative 10kt gold frame. Featured at the center of the agate plaque is an intricate image created entirely with micro mosaic tiles. The scenic motif depicts a trio of birds, two of them nested together the base, and the third perched upon a branch. Each tiny tile has been meticulously cut and individually hand set, which brings the image to life in incredible detail. The delicate mosaic handiwork is so fine that it almost resembles a painting, complete with colorful feathers, a green grassy field, and a white sky. The agate plaque that surrounds the mosaic image displays the most incredible shade of blue, revealing natural bands of milky white on the reverse side of the piece. Encasing the centerpiece is a gold bezel frame adorned with a decorative Etruscan wirework border. On the back of the piece is a secure pin clasp, allowing it to fasten to a favorite garment. An outstanding example of antique micro mosaic jewelry, this charming piece would make a special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The piece measures 2 3/8" wide, just over 1 1/8" tall, and about 3/16" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the agate plaque, which remains free of any noticeable chips or scratches. The micro mosaic image is in excellent condition, with all original tiles remaining intact and securely in place. The pin clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
