Victorian Large 20kt Pietra Dura Pin/Locket Pendant
Pietra Dura is an art-historical term for the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. The stonework is assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible.
A stunning Pietra Dura pendant locket/pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This incredible piece is crafted in vibrant 20kt yellow gold and can be worn as a pendant locket or as a pin and carries a wonderful, blooming floral design. The piece, which is particularly large in size, is oval in shape and displays a rich black stone plaque that rests in the center of an ornate gold setting. In the middle of the plaque is a beautiful floral design which is portrayed by mossy green and grayish white inlaid stones. The design is so fine that it almost appears to be a painting and the image comes to life against the dark background. Encircling the floral Pietra Dura is a bold gold frame, decorated with scalloped wirework and beadwork, perfectly completing the ornate look. On the back of the pendant locket/pin is a glass covered locket face which is perfect for displaying your favorite photograph and the entire piece hangs from a large, hidden hook bail. Also found on the back is a secure pin clasp and the hook bail is stamped with a small hallmark. Unusual and beautiful, this breathtaking piece would make a stunning addition to any collection!
Measurement: The pin/pendant measures a little less than 2 1/8" long, is 1 5/8" at the widest point, and 3/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin/pendant locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the Pietra Dura design. The glass covered locket back is secure and in good working condition and the pin clasp and hook bail are in good working order.
