Product Details

Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.

This attractive chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the Niello craft! Made of sterling silver, the chain is extremely long in length and comprised of elongated Niello links that form a striking necklace. Each ellipse-shaped link is enameled on both sides, and carries three symbols in the center that appear as shown:  "- + -" with a plus sign resting in between two minus signs. Connecting each link together is a section of rose gold colored jump rings, giving the piece a lovely mixed metals design. At the center of the necklace is a large spring ring clasp, making it easy to double or triple the chain, or hang a complimentary locket or pendant if desired. The clasp is enameled all the way around in a traditional striped Niello motif, and is stamped "000" and "H.F.W." A fabulous and versatile everyday piece, it is a wonderful example of the Niello art form and would make an excellent addition to any collection!

Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures 58" long. Each ellipse-shaped Niello link measures 3/4" long and 3/8" wide.

Condition: The overall condition of the chain is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the the sterling silver or rose gold. There is some slight surface wear to some of the the Niello enameled motif, which is normal for a Victorian piece, and is not noticeable when worn. The spring ring clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
