French paste is a vintage jewelry term used to describe the practice of using faceted cut glass, cut in the shape of a real gemstone, instead of using gems. This process, which was developed in the 1700s, created the look of a sparkling gemstone or diamond but cost much less than real stones.

A stunning French paste sun pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Originally a pin, this piece is a wonderful example of antique conversion jewelry. The pendant is crafted in sterling silver, and forms the shape of a beautiful sun with 16 short rays that form a border. The entire surface of the piece is adorned with sparkling French paste stones, which include mine cuts and cushion cuts resting in a closed back setting. The result is an incredibly bright appearance that catches the light beautifully when worn!  A large fluted bail is attached to the top of the pendant, making it easy to hang and wear from a favorite silver chain. Both feminine and beautiful, this sparkling sunburst pendant would make a gorgeous addition to any collection!

Measurements: The piece hangs 2 1/2" long, including the bail at the top. The sun measures 1 3/4" in diameter, and is 5/16" thick.

Condition: The pendant is in excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting, and the bail is secure and in good working condition. All of the French paste stones are intact and securely set. There is a natural patina on the surface of the silver, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry. The back of the setting shows where the original pin stem was attached, but is not visible when the piece is worn.
