French paste is a vintage jewelry term used to describe the practice of using faceted cut glass, cut in the shape of a real gemstone, instead of using gems. This process, which was developed in the 1700's, created the look of sparkling gemstones or diamonds, but cost much less than using real stones.

An exquisite French paste Riviera necklace from the late Art Deco (ca1930s) era! This elegant piece is formed by a row of slightly graduated French paste stones, each one resting in a sterling silver 6-prong setting. The faceted French paste crystals are held in an open back setting, allowing the light to pass through and catch the facets brilliantly at every turn, beautifully mimicking the look of real diamonds. The necklace fastens with a spring ring clasp at the back, allowing it to drape beautifully along the neckline. This wonderful necklace looks stunning when worn, and would be mesmerizing day or night!

Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 15.75" long. The largest French paste stones at the center measures about 9mm in diameter and the smallest measures about 7mm in diameter.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is great. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting and the spring ring clasp is secure and in good working condition.
