Art Nouveau 14kt/18kt Rainbow Moonstone Lavalier Pendant Necklace
According to the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), moonstones are members of the feldspar family of minerals, specifically the orthoclase group. Moonstones exhibit a phenomenon called adularescence, which is when light hits the stone, it appears to billow across the surface, displaying an incredible glowing appearance. Labradorite is another species of the feldspar family that can also exhibit adularescence, and one variety is known in the trade as rainbow moonstone. These Madagascar-mined stones display multicolored adularescence over a light body color. Despite their name, rainbow moonstones are actually a variety of labradorite rather than orthoclase. These gorgeous stones closely resemble real moonstones and have been showcased in jewelry throughout the ages.
