Art Nouveau French 18kt/Sterling Carved Moonstone Face + Diamond Crescent Pin
An exquisite moonstone pin from the Art Nouveau (ca1905) era! French in origin, this whimsical piece is crafted in 18kt yellow gold and sterling silver, and adorns an alluring carved moonstone on the front. The celestial design portrays a recognizable "Man in the Moon" face, which has intricately carved facial features and a realistic 3-dimensional look. The milky bezel set stone rests on a mother of pearl backing, exhibiting a lovely translucence and iridescence when turned in the light. Hugging the side of centerpiece is a delicate crescent moon lined with graduated old Mine Cut diamonds. The stones are set in sterling silver, adding a wonderful mixed metals contrast to the yellow gold. Resting on the back is the original "c" catch clasp (stamped with a French hallmark of opposed boar and eagle heads indicating its mixed metals setting), a pin bar stamped with a maker's mark, and a perfect spot for adding a bail if desired, allowing the pin to also be worn as a pendant. The flash of the moonstone and the radiance of the sparkling diamonds catch the light beautifully, creating a fabulous statement piece when worn. A stunning piece, perfect for day or night, this incredible pin would make a fantastic addition to any jewelry collection!
Measurements: The pin measures approximately 3/4" in diameter, and is slightly less than 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and sterling silver setting. The carved moonstone is intact, securely set, and free of surface chips or scratches. All of the diamonds are intact and securely set. There is a natural darkened patina on some of the silver, which is common given the age of the piece and adds to its overall beauty and character.
