"Plique A Jour" is a French term that means "braid letting in daylight". The term refers to the technique in which enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing. This allows light to shine through the transparent or translucent enamel and form a beautiful stained glass like appearance.
A fabulous plique-à-jour scarab pin from the Art Deco (ca1920) era! This wonderful piece is made of sterling silver and depicts a lovely scarab beetle with wide open wings. The body of the beetle is portrayed by a gorgeous bezel set amethyst stone which is set in the center. The body has a hand carved in a design on the surface. The plique-à-jour wings of the bug display vibrant hues of green and blue and the mix of purple with green and blue is absolutely stunning! Antennae and legs sprout from the top and bottom of the bug and on the back is the original c-catch clasp, under which “935” is stamped. It's a wonderful pin and would be fantastic addition to any collection!
Measurement: The pin measures 2” wide, 5/8" at the tallest point and is slightly more than 1/4" at its deepest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting, the plique-à-jour enameling, or the amethyst stone. The pin clasp is secure and in good working condition.
