Victorian 15kt Onyx Raised Butterfly Locket w/ Diamonds
An absolutely magnificent 15kt gold and onyx locket/pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This gorgeous and very unusual piece has a solid onyx face and a 15kt gold case. The locket has an oval shape and is particularly large in size. The onyx plaque has a concave face and resting on the face is an extravagant picture which depicts an extremely detailed butterfly resting on a flower topped stem. The butterfly picture is made of 15kt yellow gold and accented with 14 old Rose Cut diamonds, 3 cabochon tourmaline stones and enameling. The picture is simply exquisite and ornate with a 3 dimensional appearance. The flower has open, curled petals and a stem that is lightly textured giving it a life-like look. The butterfly has long, bent legs and beautiful extended wings that are lined with a scalloped, enamel edge. Thirteen Rose Cut diamonds are set within the enameled border and 3 cabochon tourmalines are set within the wings. A single Rose Cut diamond acts as the eye of the butterfly and 2 long antennae stretch high above its' head. The onyx rests on the face of a 15kt yellow gold case that houses the glass covered locket. A 15kt gold bail that is detailed with a simple black enameled design rests at the top of the locket. It's a magnificent and unusual piece from the Victorian era and would make a great addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs a little longer than 2 1/2" long, is a little less than 1 1/2" wide and 1/2" thick. The gold and enamel bail at the top has interior measurements of 1/2" tall and a little more than 1/4" wide.
Condition: The overall condition is excellent. Amazingly, there is only one, very minor and unnoticeable chip on the edge of the onyx. All of the diamonds and tourmalines are intact. There is no apparent damage to the gold case or to the gold picture on the face. The gold glass-covered frame on the back of the locket opens easily and stays securely closed.
