Early Retro 14kt/Sterling Ruby + Diamond "Josephine Baker" Dancer Pin
A stunning "dancer" pin from the early Retro (ca1930s) era! This gorgeous figural piece is crafted in 14kt rose and yellow gold, and portrays an expressive female dancer. The design bears some resemblance to the famous turn-of-the-century entertainer Josephine Baker, who has been depicted in various forms of art throughout the decades following her career. Although the back of the design reveals a nude figure, from the front the dancer wears a full flowing skirt adorned with beautiful gemstones. Dotting the center of the skirt are eight old Mine Cut rubies, which are set in etched starburst borders, and display a luscious pink color. Three delicate rose cut diamonds line a crescent-shaped waistband, which is crafted in sterling silver. At the base of the skirt is a rose gold hem, complete with an open filigree wirework design. The body of the skirt is topped in yellow gold with an applied semi-matte finish, providing beautiful mixed metals contrast. The dancer performs gracefully, balancing on pointe in slippers, with one leg raised behind her. Both arms are outstretched, and her head tilts back, depicting elegant poise and technique. Her hair is styled short and close to the head, and a bangle bracelet around one wrist is the perfect finishing touch. On the back of the piece is a secure pin clasp, which is curved behind the body to remain invisible when worn. A very special piece, this pin would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurement: The design measures approximately 1 3/4" tall, 1 3/8" across at the widest point, and about 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of this piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and sterling silver setting. All of the rubies and diamonds are intact and securely set. The pin clasp fastens securely and remains in good working condition.
