Estate 14kt Blue Glass Tassie Dangle Earrings
A Tassie is a paste or glass copy of a cameo or intaglio. Scottish gem engraver James Tassie created replicas of ancient agates and gemstones and together with Dr. Henry Quin of Dublin, they came up with an opaque glass that could replicate various colors and patterns. Tassies were created using a molding process rather than carving. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax, often used in signet rings.
A beautiful pair of Estate tassie earrings! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, each earring features carved glass plaques which display an incredible royal blue hue. The carved intaglios are set within a wide gold bezel frame and dangle from a simple gold surmount adorned with a convex disc. Each tassie differs subtly in image, with one depicting Apollo holding a lyre and a bow following a winged cherub; the other with Aphrodite emerging from the sea, announced by a figure playing a horn. The unique design is a wonderful nod to the Victorian era craft and the earrings would make a very special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 1 1/2" in length (including the wire) and measure 5/8" wide and 1/8" thick.
Condition: The earrings are in overall excellent condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting, the tassie plaques, or the wires which are secure and in good working condition.
