GEORG ADAM SCHEID Victorian Austrian Silver + Niello Cloverleaf Motif Box
Georg Adam Scheid (G.A.S.) was an Austrian silversmith and jeweler during the Victorian era. In 1853, he began an apprenticeship at the age of 16, and moved to Vienna in 1858, entering the workshop of Michael Markowitsch, an established maker of gold, silver, and jewelry goods. Scheid began his own grand scale operation in 1882, producing a variety of silver and enameled goods, specializing in small objects and jewelry. His works were sold in great quantity throughout the majority of Western Europe. Scheid eventually retired in 1911, leaving the business to his sons.
Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is an enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.
This gorgeous Austrian box from the Victorian era (ca1872-1922) is a wonderful example of the Niello art form and Georg Adam Scheid's work! Crafted in .900 silver, this round box features a gorgeous cloverleaf motif that covers the entire surface. The incredible design features swirling vines, various sized clovers and delicate flowers. Adorning the lid of the box is a smooth, plain round circle, where a set of personalized initials could be engraved if desired. A hinged design at the back allows the box to open with ease to reveal a gorgeous 9kt rose gold overlay inside. The smoothly polished interior catches the light beautifully and is a perfect place to store jewelry or special keepsakes. Stamped inside (both on the top and bottom) is Georg Adam Scheid's signature hallmark "G.A.S." along with a Dianakopf (also known as Diana) head mark, and a date letter "A," dating this piece to Vienna between 1872-1922. An incredible and decorative box by a famed silversmith, it would make a wonderful addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: The base of the box has a diameter of approximately 3" and measures a little less than 3/4" tall, including the rim of the neck. The lid has a diameter of approximately 1 3/4" and measures 3/8" tall. In total height, the box stands about 1" tall.
