Georgian 15kt Foil Back Quartz Dog "Time Passes Friendship Remains" Intaglio Ring
The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving into the surface of a stone to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax. A signet ring can be represented with an intaglio, or with a simple smooth seal. Its purpose would have been to sign and seal the wax of a letter or note.
A stunning and unusual intaglio signet ring from the Georgian (ca1820) era! This spectacular piece is crafted in 15kt yellow gold, and features a bezel- set quartz resting along a decorative band. Carved horizontally into the center of the stone is the image of a charming dog resting beside a sundial, while the sun is shining brightly above. The endearing French motto is carved around the perimeter of the image, "LE TEMS PASSE L'AMITIE RESTE" which translates to "time passes, the friendship remains." The polished stone is held within a foil backed setting, exhibiting a soft, yellow hue as the light catches it beautifully with every turn. Completing the stylish design are wide, scrolled shoulders featuring lovely beadwork and delicate cutouts. A complimentary carved design wraps around the mounting and onto the band, which trails into a smooth finish at the back. A fabulous and incredible piece with a delightful message, this remarkable ring would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 8.25, but can be resized. The centerpiece measures 1/2" wide and a little more than 1/2" tall, and rests 1/8" above the finger when worn. The gold band measures 2mm wide at the back.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The quartz intaglio is securely set and free of chips or scratches.
