Large Victorian Tortoise Shell Locket

A fantastic large-scale tortoise shell locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Now a banned material, antique tortoise shell jewelry has become very collectible. This unusual piece is a tortoise shell locket that hangs from a modern removable 14k gold bail. The rich tortoise shell varies in color with wonderful deep brown, amber and caramel hues. The locket is simple in style with no carvings or applied elements, but the translucent shell features incredible color variation throughout, making this a really wonderful example of the craft. The locket is hinged and opens to reveal spaces to store two special photographs inside. A remarkably bold and attractive statement piece, it would make a fabulous addition to any collection!

Measurements: The locket hangs 2 1/2" long, is 1 1/4" wide and 1/2" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Aside from normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the tortoise shell locket. The locket opens easily and fastens securely.
