Reverse carved crystal is a technique created by cutting rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three-dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.

A gorgeous and unusual pair of reverse carved crystal cufflinks from the late Victorian (ca1900) era! Each 18kt yellow gold piece adorns a matching hand-painted image on the back of a large rock crystal cabochon. The incredibly detailed motif depicts the body of a vibrant fly insect with delicate open wings. Intricate hand-painted detail throughout amazingly portrays its iridescent black and blue body, six textured legs, pointed antennae, delicate translucent veined wings, and two round, red eyes. The bezel set rock crystal cabochons rest in a rounded frame with an open back, allowing the light to pass through and the incredible carved image to be visible from both sides. A simple link rests across the back, attached to a 14kt yellow gold chain that dangles a twisted rope style bar. A very unique and attractive pair of cufflinks, they would look wonderful worn by a man or woman!

Measurements: Each rock crystal cufflink face measures approximately 7/8" tall, about 5/8" wide, and 1/4" thick. The connector chain on the back measure about 3/4" long.

Condition: The overall condition of the cufflink set is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to gold setting and the crystals show only minimal surface wear. One of the painted images displays very minor fading, however due to the size and intricate nature, it is not noticeable when worn. The chain and links on the back are secure and in good working order.
