Late Victorian 9kt Saphiret Glass "Man in the Moon" Medallion Pendant
Saphiret glass is a form of art glass dating back to the mid 1800s. Originating in Chechoslovakia, it consists of a hybrid of sapphire-colored glass and liquid gold. When combined, the two materials produce an unusual multi-colored appearance. Although the glass appears to be brownish-red in color, it emits a blue flash when caught in the light.
An exceptional "Man in the Moon" medallion pendant from the late Victorian (ca1906) era! This 9kt rose gold achievement badge features a stunning piece of saphiret glass resting at the center of the shield-shaped pendant. The recognizable "Man in the Moon" face is intricately carved into the glass, showcasing a whimsical 3-dimensional facial expression. The translucent saphiret glass displays a characteristic reddish brown color, revealing an iridescent blue flash. The quality of the color play is difficult to capture in a photograph, but is quite striking in person! Lovely floral etching decorates the entire medallion, and gorgeous shapely cutouts complete the design. A simple bail is attached at the top, perfect for hanging from a complementary chain. Several English hallmarks are stamped on the back of the piece, including an anchor, indicating the piece was assayed in Birmingham, the gold purity marks "9 375," the maker's initials "R.P." and the date letter "g" (which dates the piece to the year 1906). A unique and magnificent piece, this late Victorian pendant would make a fantastic addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 3/4" long (including the bail at the top). The medallion pendant itself, measures about 1 5/8" long, 1 1/8" wide, and 1/4” thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the rose gold setting. The saphiret glass is intact and securely set. There is a natural darkened patina on some of the gold surface, which is normal given the age of the piece and adds to its beauty and character.
