Early Victorian French Import 18kt Rose Cut Diamond + Ruby Snake Bracelet 1.25ctw
An absolutely stunning and unique diamond snake bracelet from the Early Victorian (ca1814-1865) era! Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, this fantastic bangle portrays a snake whose body curls around the wrist, with its head and tail overlapping at the center, forming a striking bypass style design. The ornate head is adorned with 6 graduated old Rose Cut diamonds that weigh approximately 1.25ctw combined, resting in a unique elongated diamond-shaped box setting, catching the light beautifully with every turn. A lovely raspberry red ruby dots each eye, and the snake's mouth is slightly open, showcasing the light outline of its spiked teeth. Decorating the outer surface of the entire bangle is a fabulous etched design that creates the appearance of "scales," providing a wonderful eye-catching textural appeal. The bangle is hinged on the side, and fastens with a push clasp stamped on the tongue with a Danish lion head, indicating its gold purity and that it was assayed in the Netherlands between 1814-1865 and two French owl marks, indicating it was imported into France, a safety latch, and chain. An unusual piece, the bracelet looks stunning when worn, and would make a perfect addition to any collection!
Measurements: The bracelet opening where a wrist would rest, measures approximately 2 1/8" wide and 1 7/8" tall, and would fit on a small to average sized wrist. The bypass style design at the front measures about 1/2" wide, the surface of the bangle at the back measures 1/4" wide and thick. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 14.2dwt (22 grams).
Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the gold setting, except for two indentations which are hardly noticeable due to the location, size, and textured surface. All of the diamonds and rubies are intact and securely set. The clasp, safety latch, and chain are secure and in good working condition. Due to the hand cut nature of old Rose Cut diamonds, the shape of the stones do not have perfect symmetry. This reflects the age and genuine appearance of antique diamonds.
