Late Victorian Large 18kt Carved Rock Crystal Fob Pendant

The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.

fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.

A gorgeous and unusual multi intaglio fob pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 18kt rosy yellow gold, this unique piece consists of a trio of octagonal shaped rock quartz crystal plaques which graduate in size and hang vertically. The back of each stone reveals a beautifully faceted surface, while the front is hand-carved with an intricate leaf and swirled vine design. A lovely beveled edge border adorns each stone, and when light passes through, it beautifully reflects the facets with every turn. Each bezel set polished plaque is hinged together and a decorative wirework design rests at top, where a lovely leaf motif embellishes the front of a watch swivel clasp bail. Additionally, there is a small hidden bail at the base of the pendant which could be used for attaching an additional complimentary pendant or stone. Stamped on the back of the wirework design is a maker's mark and two French import owl touchmarks along with "750," both indicating its gold purity. This incredible fob would look stunning hanging from a favorite chain, and would make a unique and wonderful additional to any collection!

Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 2 7/8" long, including the bail at the top, and measures about 1 1/8" wide and 3/8" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to any of the rock crystal plaques, which is intact and securely set. The watch swival bail is secure and in good working order.
