MARGOT DE TAXCO Vintage Sterling + Enameled Floral Earrings and Pin Set

Margot van Voorhies Carr, professionally known as Margot de Taxco, was a major contributor to the success of Taxco silver. Margot first came to Mexico in 1937 and soon thereafter met and married Don Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo (another well know Mexican silver jewelry artist). During her time with him, he encouraged her to translate her designs from paper to three-dimensional forms in silver. Many early designs of Los Castillo bear the obvious contributions of Margot de Taxco. After divorcing Antonio, Margot went out on her own with a business card that read, “As the stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman”. Margot is most famous for her works in enamels on silver and her devotion to Art Deco, Mayan and Japanese-inspired motifs. Her clients at the time included such Hollywood celebrities as John Wayne and Lana Turner and her vintage silver pieces and stunning enamel work have become highly collectable today.

This Vintage earring and pin set is a signed compilation by Margot de Taxco from the 1950s and is a fine example of her amazing talent and creativity! The set is crafted in sterling silver and consists of dangling screwback earrings, and a feminine pin, all adorned with a matching flower motif. The 3-dimensional flower closely resembles a lotus, with a trio of petals at the front, decorated with light blue enamel over a subtly dotted background. Additional petals emerge from the top and bottom, embellished in a soft white enamel, finishing the lovely floral design.

Each earring dangles the colorful floral motif from a silver bead topper featuring a screwback on the back, perfect for pierced or non-pierced ears and can easily be converted to a post and earring back, if desired. The pin features two flowers, with white enameled stems that swirl around, entwined in a light blue enameled accent at the base. A simple bar pin and clasp are attached at the back, where several hallmarks are found including the signature "MARGOT DE TAXCO" beside her maker's mark, "STERLING MADE IN MEXICO" and the number "5837," which are also found on the back of the earring toppers. An incredibly bold but feminine design by a fabulous female designer, this versatile set makes a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurements:  Each earring hangs about 1 1/2" long, and measures approximately 7/8" wide, and is a little less than 7/8" thick. The pin measures approximately 2" wide, 1 1/2" tall, and is 1/4" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the set is great. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the sterling silver setting. The enameling remains in very good condition, however, there are a few tiny cracks in the white enameling and some fading to the blue enameling.  None of the damage is significant or noticeable when worn. The earring screwbacks, and pin clasp are secure and in good working condition.
