MARGOT Vintage Mexican Sterling Horse Earring Pin Set
Margot van Voorhies Carr, professionally known as Margot de Taxco, was a major contributor to the success of Taxco silver. Margot first came to Mexico in 1937 and soon thereafter met and married Don Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo (another well know Mexican silver jewelry artist). During her time with him, he encouraged her to translate her designs from paper to three-dimensional forms in silver. Many early designs of Los Castillo bear the obvious contributions of Margot de Taxco. After divorcing Antonio, Margot went out on her own with a business card that read, “As the stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman”. Margot is most famous for her works in enamels on silver and her devotion to Art Deco, Mayan and Japanese-inspired motifs. Her clients at the time included such Hollywood celebrities as John Wayne and Lana Turner, and her vintage silver pieces and stunning enamel work have become highly collectable today.
This wonderful vintage pin and earring set is a fine example of Margot de Taxco's work! The three piece set is made of sterling silver and has a wonderful equestrian motif, depicting the head and neck of a charming horse. Included in the set is a large pin and a pair of matching earrings, each bearing the same whimsical, artistic design. The horse is shown with an elegantly curved neck, pointed ears, and its mane gathered into a spiraled braid. The pin is accented with a copper-colored eye, adding a subtle mixed metals accent to the piece. On the back of the pin is a simple bar pin and clasp, while the earrings hang from simple sterling wires. Stamped on the back of the three pieces are several hallmarks, including: "MARGOT DE TAXCO," "STERLING," "MADE IN MEXICO," and the serial numbers "5160". A fun and delightful design, this wonderful set is perfect for the horse lover or for any Margot de Taxco collector!
Measurements: The pin measures 2" tall and 1 1/8" wide. The earrings hang 1 1/2" long and measure 3/4" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the set is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. The pin back fastens securely and is in good working condition, and both earring wires are secure and intact. The horse's eye on one of the earrings shows more wear than the other, however this is not noticeable when worn. There is a natural darkened patina within the grooves of the silver, which is normal and adds depth to the design.
