Retro 18kt Multi Gemstone Navaratna Talisman Ring
Navaratna is Sanskrit compound word which means "nine gems" or "ratnas". Jewelry created in this style is known to have important significance across many southern and south-eastern Asian cultures as a symbol of wealth and status and is thought to have talismanic benefits of health and well being. The positioning of the gemstones is believed to hold mystical powers and tied to the mythological concepts around cosmology and astrology. It is intrinsically linked to the Indian religions of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.
A gorgeous Navaratna ring from the 1940s era! This wonderful piece honors the Navagraha Yantra with its gem placement, creating a traditional talisman. Crafted in 18kt gold, the ring features nine gems in a traditional celestial Navagraha arrangement, with the colorful positioning centering around a ruby, which represents the sun. Clockwise from the top center, the stunning design holds a diamond (Shukra, Venus), a natural pearl (Chandra, the Moon), red coral (Mangala, Mars), hessonite (Rahu, the ascending lunar node), blue sapphire (Shani, Saturn), cat's eye (Ketu, the descending lunar node), yellow sapphire (Bṛhaspati, Jupiter), and an emerald (Budha, Mercury). Each stone is prong set within a square-shaped centerpiece which features a dramatic scalloped border and pointed corners. The stones are visually clean and high quality, as is required for Navaratna gem purity to bring positive energy and combat negative powers. The band graduates towards the back and a ridged design adorns each shoulder of the mounting, perfectly completing the look. On the underside of the closed back setting are two hand inscribed characters. The ring is perfect for any person who appreciates the meaning behind the celestial talisman and would make a lovely addition to any collection!
Measurements: The ring fits a finger size 5.75. The gemstone centerpiece measures approximately 3/8" by 3/8" and sits nearly 1/8" above the finger when worn. Each gem measures approximately 2.5mm in diameter.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. All nine of the gems are intact and securely set.
