Retro Large Black Bakelite Heart Pendant + Celluloid Chain Necklace
Bakelite is a resin material that was produced in the early 1900s, and was the first plastic substance made of synthetic components. Initially used for its electrically non-conductive and heat resistant properties in radio and telephone castings, the material was also used in other products such as children's toys, kitchenware and jewelry. Typically made of bright, beautiful colors, Bakelite jewelry has become very collectible over recent years and is appreciated amongst many vintage jewelry lovers worldwide.
A fabulous Bakelite and celluloid necklace from the Retro (ca1940s) era! This oversized statement piece is comprised of an exceptionally large carved Bakelite heart pendant, which hangs from a black celluloid link chain. The puffy heart is carved from solid Bakelite and then smoothly polished, displaying a rich black color with a surface that reflects the light beautifully with every turn. The celluloid chain boasts a similar bold black color with subtle swirls of dark and light brown marbling throughout, providing the perfect compliment to the heart pendant. When worn, the necklace slips easily on and off overhead, no need for a clasp. Very fun and funky, this bold conversation piece would make an essential addition to any Bakelite collection!
Measurements: The celluloid chain measures approximately 25" long. The pendant hangs from a 1 1/2" chain extension at the center. The Bakelite heart measures 2 3/4" tall and wide, and 1/2" thick. The total weight of the piece is approximately 59 grams.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the Bakelite heart. The celluloid chain displays a few chips throughout, however they are very small and not noticeable when worn. All of the interlocking chain links are securely attached.
