SLOAN & CO. Art Nouveau 14kt Ruby Devil Belt Buckle
A stunning belt buckle from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era by prestigious Newark, NJ maker Sloan & Company! Crafted in 14kt gold, the front of this piece features the raised image of a dramatic devil's face. The 3-dimensional design comes to life in fine repousse detail, complete with textured horns, sculpted facial features, and a pointed goatee. Two ruby cabochons represent the devil's deep raspberry eyes, adding a wonderful pop of color to the design. The buckle is hinged on the side, and when opened, the lovely repousse design can be seen through a cut out on the back. The other side reveals two cut outs, including a lovely tulip shaped motif at the center and a long slit at the end, where a belt or hooks could be slipped through to hold the piece place. Stamped on the back is a "14" gold purity mark, beside the Sloan & Company's hallmark of a trident. Both striking and artistic, this unique belt buckle would make fantastic and unique addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: The buckle measures approximately 1" wide, 1 1/8" tall, and is approximately 1/4" thick. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 5.9dwt (9.2 grams).
Condition: The overall condition of the belt buckle is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting or to the repousse design. The rubies are intact and securely set. The buckle opens easily and closes securely shut. There is a natural patina on some parts of the front surface, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry and adds additional depth to the design.
