TIFFANY & CO. Art Deco 14kt Nephrite Jade Carved "Palm Leaf" Signet Ring
A signet ring can be represented with an intaglio, which is created by carving below the surface of a stone, or by a simple smooth seal. Its purpose would have been to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A stunning and unique intaglio signet ring from the late Art Deco (ca1930) era by legendary designer Tiffany & Co.! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, this gorgeous ring features a vibrant hexagonal shaped nephrite jade stone at the center of an ornately carved band. The deep mossy green stone is bezel set in an open back setting, allowing the light to pass through and showcase its natural beauty. Carved into the smooth center of the nephrite is a beautifully detailed image of a single palm leaf resting horizontally across the background behind a window pain. The symbolism behind the palm leaf is revealed on a partially faded Latin phrase inscribed along the inside of the shank, "Non sine pulvere palma." The phrase, which directly translates to "no palms without dust," refers to the prize of palms or a wreath awarded to the winners of chariot races in ancient times. This phrase is commonly used in school mottos and is more recently translated to "no reward without effort," "dare to try," or "I can, I will." A smoothly polished border surrounds the stones and the surface extends onto the wide shoulders where a unique "S" shaped motif is carved on each side, resting against a lightly textured background. The band tapers slightly towards the back and stamped inside of the shank are various markings, including a "14K" gold purity mark beside the signature "TIFFANY & CO." hallmark, along with the initials, "J.I.K" and the meaningful Latin phrase. A magnificent example of a signet ring from this era with incredible symbolism, it makes a fabulous statement when worn, and is perfect for a man or woman!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 7.75, but could be resized. The intaglio centerpieces measures approximately 1/2" tall and wide, and rests 1/8" above the finger when worn. The graduated band measures 4mm wide at the back.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting. The nephrite stone is intact and securely set.
