Victorian 12kt Enameled + Hand Painted "Prisoner of Love" Cherub Locket
A gorgeous and unique locket from the Victorian (1880s) era! Crafted in 12kt yellow gold, this whimsical piece displays a hand painted image of a purple-winged cherub behind locked bars, awaiting his release. The lovely image is painted on ceramic with an enameled overlay and is bezel set on the front surface of the locket. The bezel adorns a textured surface and the painting is encircled by a delicate and feminine engraved scalloped design. The reverse side of the locket is decorated with a matching scalloped border and dotted diamond-shaped design which has the soft appearance of lace. The locket opens at the side to reveal a hinged glass protecting the back of the ceramic cherub, ready to hold a new photograph of a loved one. Also on the inside is the engraved numbers "42" twice and "44" as well as inscribed lettering, possibly identifying the original maker or owner. This elegant piece would be a beautiful addition to any collection.
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 1 3/4" long including the bail. It measures approximately 1" wide and 3/8" deep, weighing 11.6 grams.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the hand painted ceramic or to the locket casing. The bail is secure and intact. The inner glass is intact and the hinges are in good working condition.
