Victorian 12kt/Sterling Agate Spinner Fob Locket Pendant
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. A spinner or swivel fob has two or more sides, which can be turned or swiveled within a moveable bracket. This allows the wearer a choice as to which side is displayed prominently!
The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving into the surface of a stone to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
A gorgeous intaglio spinner fob locket from the late Victorian (ca1900) era! Crafted in 12kt rose gold with sterling silver accents, this intricate and double-sided pendant displays a fabulous mixed metals appeal. A round agate plaque rests at the center of one side, adorned with an intaglio image of a Greek or Roman figure head in profile. The hand-carved details are incredible, including delicate facial features, textured hair, and an ornate headpiece. A beautiful border of alternating silver and rose gold form a two-tone checkerboard pattern around the intaglio and the reverse side of the fob features a smooth gold surface with the engraved initials, "WM" or "MW" in a beautiful script. The ornate spinner features two animal heads at the top, each clenching slithering snakes in their mouths. The snakes curve down the sides and curl around each hinge, providing a dramatic effect. The locket opens to reveal an engine turned design covering one side, and the back of the agate on the other, where a pair of special photographs can be stored. Attached at the top is a simple gold bail, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain. A spectacular and versatile piece, it is perfect for any fob collector and would look fantastic worn daily or for special occasions!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 3/4" long (including the bail at the top), and is 1 3/8" wide, and 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage the sterling silver accents or to the rose gold setting except for some very minor dents along the outer edge of the pendant. Due to the location of the indents, they are not noticeable when worn. The agate is intact and securely set and the intaglio is in near pristine condition. The bail, locket, and spinner mechanism are secure and in good working condition. There is a natural darkened patina along parts of the edge of the pendant, which is common given the age of the piece and adds to its beauty and character.
