Victorian 14kt Floral Swiss Enamel Dangle Earrings
Swiss enameled pieces were commonly produced to be sold as souvenirs for Victorian travelers. A very fine type of enameling, this technique used very intricate detail and often portrayed scenic Swiss Alps villages with streams, mountains and wonderful homes and churches. These serene images were produced by first covering a piece of metal in a neutral enameled color. A wonderful detailed picture was then painted on the enameled base and re-fired to set the image. A clear glaze was then applied to the image to preserve it. The pieces were often set in a hollow frame making them very light and comfortable to wear.
Although these earrings do not depict a scenic Swiss image, they feature the fine Swiss enamel craft. Dating from the Victorian (ca1880) era, each is crated in 14kt yellow gold and features an elongated ornately shaped link, with lovely cutouts at the top and bottom. A delicate tulip shaped link and beaded detail dangles from the base, adding wonderful movement to the design. Both links are embellished with a vibrant enameled floral design that rests on a rich, black background. The vibrant enameling comes alive in bright red, orange, dark and light blue, green, pink, yellow, and soft white, with each color outlined in elegant gold veins. The earrings have a hollow fabrication, making them wonderfully lightweight and comfortable to wear, despite their substantial size and length. Resting at the top is a simple earring wire, allowing them to dangle with lovely movement, framing the face beautifully. Perfect for the serious antique jewelry lover, they would make a magnificent addition to any Swiss enamel collection!
Measurements: Each earring hangs approximately 2 1/4" in total length (including the wire at the top), measures slightly less than 1" wide, and is 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. There is some very minor wear to some of the enameled surface, however is it not noticeable when worn. The wires are secure and in good working condition.
