A wonderful and unusual pair of earrings from the Victorian (circa1880) era! Each of these artistic earrings is crafted in 14kt yellow gold and displays the shape of a lovely bird resting atop a nest. Genuine bird feathers accentuate the surface of the body and tail of each bird, providing a fine, downy texture. A unique, handcrafted detail, the feathers exhibit wonderful, pale shades of blue, bright green, and taupe throughout and a pointed gold beak and faceted red stone dots each eye, providing a wonderful pop of color. The ornate nests have a wavy, gold mesh surface, displaying deep "folds" and delicate cutouts. Each 3-dimensional design hangs from a simple chain connected to a European back topper, allowing the earrings to swing with lovely movement. The round topper is adorned with a polished stud and fine beadwork, which is attached to a hinged lever back earring wire at the top. A French touchmark of an eagle head and a hallmark is stamped on the base of each earring wire. An extraordinary antique treasure, these rare earrings are perfect for the serious Victorian collector!
Measurements: Each earring hangs approximately 1 5/8" long, are 1 1/4" at the widest point (from beak to tail) and have a depth of 3/8".
Condition: The earrings show some signs of wear commensurate with age for a Victorian era piece. There are a few feathers which are no longer intact and one of the toppers has a very small hole at the point. However, the wear does not detract from the beauty of the design, which is quite remarkable and rare. Both eyes are intact and the European style wire surmounts are secure and in good working condition.
