Victorian 14kt Gold Bangle "Wedding Bracelet" Set in Box 61.1dwt
Victorian wedding bracelets are derived from a centuries old tradition! Bridal and wedding customs have evolved through the ages, but typically involved sentimental gifts with attached meanings. At the time of engagement, the first bracelet of a matching two-piece set was presented to the bride-to-be. The bracelet would be worn proudly up until the day of the wedding, at which point the second bracelet was also worn. Often passed down from a mother to her daughters, the bracelet sets were sometimes separated, making the Victorian era sets that still remain intact a special and collectible treasure!
This fantastic and unique wedding bracelet set from the Victorian era (ca1880s) is a beautiful example of the romantic tradition! The wide bangles are crafted in 14kt yellow gold, and feature a fabulous matching design that graces the front surface. The 3-dimensional design displays two gradually raised "straps" that overlap at the center in a bold bypass fashion. Decorating the center of each strap is a "loop" that is topped with a braided rope motif, and gracing the end is a fabulous scalloped edge "button" with a lovely bead detail at the tip. The entire surface of each displays a wonderful smoothly polished finish that reflects the light beautifully with every turn. Both bangles are hinged at the side, fastening at a push clasp, and two delicate gold rings remain on the edge where a safety chain once hung, and could be added again, if desired. The wedding bracelets come in the original black leather box, lined with a red colored silk interior that features two velvet lined fittings for each bangle. Stylish and versatile, the bracelets can be worn separately, or stacked together to create the illusion of a single wide bangle. This special and sentimental Victorian set would make a wonderful keepsake gift, and would look beautiful worn everyday!
Measurements: Both bracelets have the same interior measurements of approximately 2 3/8" wide and about 1 7/8" tall, and they would fit nicely on a medium to averaged sized wrist. The surface of each bracelet measures approximately 1" wide and is about 3/8" thick at the front and 1/8' thick at the back. The overall pennyweight of both pieces combined is 61.1dwt (95.2 grams).
Condition: The overall condition of both bracelets is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the gold setting except for 3 very tiny indents on the back or sides. Due to their size and location, they are not noticeable when worn. The push clasp is secure and in good working condition. There is a slightly darkened patina on parts of the surface, which is common given the age of the piece and adds to its unique beauty and character. The box fastens at a silver push clasp along the front side, which is in good working condition. The exterior of the box is in good antique condition.
